How We Built a No-Commission Fishing Platform Connecting Anglers, Guides, and Gear
Fishfin’s anglers were spread across a weather app, a booking site, a gear marketplace, and a notebook for catches, while guides paid commission on every trip just to be found. We built one platform: spot discovery with live conditions, guide booking with no commission taken, an in-app gear marketplace, and catch logging that builds community. Over 300 new visitors monthly, 350 rods sold, 100 trips booked. Guides now keep every dollar they earn.
Fishfin is a US-based fishing app that brings real-time fish and weather tracking, a gear marketplace, and guide bookings together in one place. It’s built for the full experience: finding a spot, checking the conditions, booking a guide, buying gear, and logging catches, for both the seasoned angler and the person completely new to the sport.
They weren’t looking to add one feature to an existing tool. They wanted the scattered fishing experience, spread across separate apps and commission-charging booking services, pulled into a single platform that worked for anglers and guides alike.
The fishing world had never had a platform built around it. Anglers used one app to check conditions, another to find a guide, a shop or general marketplace to buy gear, and nothing in particular to log a catch or share a spot. Each piece existed somewhere, but nothing connected them.
Guides carried a specific version of that problem. Booking platforms charged commission on every trip, taking a cut of income guides had already worked for. For a guide running a small operation, that commission was a direct tax on a living.
New charters faced a trust problem on top of the cost one. A guide just starting out has no track record to point to, which makes it hard to win the first customers and grow. And the audience was not uniformly tech-savvy: a fishing platform has to work for a lifelong angler who has never used an app like it, not just for a younger, app-native user.
We started from the people the sport actually revolves around, anglers and guides, rather than from the category of app this could become. Spots, conditions, gear, guides, and catches are one experience, and a guide’s livelihood sits inside it.
We worked through both sides with the Fishfin team: what an angler needs to find a spot, check conditions, book a trip, and buy gear, and what a guide needs to register, reach customers, and keep their earnings. The no-commission model wasn’t a feature we added. It was baked into how the platform works from the start.
We built a registration and booking flow that puts guides in front of customers without taking a cut of their trips. A guide keeps what they earn, and the platform generates revenue without taxing the people who do the work.
We built catch logging and social features so anglers can record what they land, find spots, and share experiences with the community. The scattered habit of tracking trips across notes and other apps now lives in one place.
We built a marketplace for buying and selling fishing gear directly inside the app. Gear sits alongside the spots, guides, and conditions in the same experience anglers are already using.
We built real-time weather and location features that give anglers the conditions and performance insight they need to plan a better trip, tied directly to the spots and trips they're planning.
The no-commission model went into the platform’s foundation first. Because guides keep their trip earnings, the revenue model had to work another way from the start, and designing for that up front kept the promise structural.
We designed for a non-technical audience deliberately, treating simplicity as a requirement. For a sport full of people who have never used an app like this, an interface that needed training would have lost the very users Fishfin exists to serve.
Throughout the six-month build, we kept the Fishfin team close to the work. A platform serving both anglers and working guides touches real livelihoods, and decisions made without the people who fish and guide for a living tend to feel wrong on the water.
Fishfin went live as a single platform for the whole fishing experience, drawing over 300 new visitors a month, with 350-plus fishing rods sold and 100-plus trips booked through it. Anglers find spots, check conditions, book guides, buy gear, and log catches in one app.
Guides book trips directly through the platform and keep every dollar they earn. The fragmentation that used to define the sport has been replaced by one platform built for the whole community on fair terms. More anglers, more guides, and more gear extend the same foundation from here.
"Fishfin has transformed how we connect with fishing enthusiasts. It's a seamless experience for both customers and guides, and it's helping us grow our business in ways we never imagined."
We build for that standard.
